We operate in an industry that may produce large amounts of pollution if we don't manage our operations so as to preserve the environment. We're proud that our management of environmental programs has achieved the following key accomplishments:
We utilize pollution control systems as one tool to help us minimize our impact on the environment and the community, especially in our global locations. Installation and operation of control systems in our global locations allows us to provide environmental performance equal to that seen in our best performing facilities in the United States.
The list below shows where (and when) this best available air pollution control equipment was installed at our heatset lithographic printing plants. For some of these locations, we have had this equipment in place for many years.
- Cerrillos, Chile (installed 1998)
- Flaxby Moor, England (two devices installed in 2000)
- Krakow, Poland (installed at first location in 1994, replaced in 2004. Installed at second location in 1997)
- San Juan del Rio, Mexico (installed 1999)
- Tamboré, Brazil (installed 2000)
- Shanghai, China (installed 2002)
Increased Gravure Efficiency
- Through improvements in our solvent recovery systems, we have reduced total toluene emissions from our gravure printing operations by 77 million pounds since 1990 compared to the emissions if the improvements had not been made.
Energy Efficient Offset Controls
- We have achieved 90-95% energy savings through the use of effective pollution control.
- This energy savings has also allowed us to significantly reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases.
Air Permit Compliance Program
- We are currently managing permits for all affected facilities. These air permits require substantial reporting requirements, including mandatory self-reporting of non-compliance.
