RR Donnelley is continually exploring emerging technologies in order to remain state-of-the-art. Our prepress capabilities reflect this cutting-edge digital approach; our manufacturing platforms embrace integrated electronic solutions.
Production services with RR Donnelley address all manufacturing plans. We can take a manuscript and produce a final book, complete with monochrome or four-color illustrations that we scanned and color corrected. Or, we can merge supplied images and text files to create finished pages. Or, take complete electronic page data and output a title in proper page imposition directly to plate or to press.
RR Donnelley works with PDF, application, and PostScript files to support the full range of desktop programs, transfer media, and type libraries. The most up-to-date versions of programs and their patches are always installed, with access to older versions of software maintained should a job require them. Our workstations are manned by highly trained Technical Specialists, and run all standard operating systems, making cross-platform transfers unnecessary.
Electronic Prepress, the conversion of digital information about text and graphics into final output-ready form, has become a major part of the book manufacturing process. Any delay at this critical stage of the workflow can impact a book’s schedule to the point where presswork is delayed and delivery dates missed. For this reason alone, well-prepared files can save time, money, and a lot of stress.
Because desktop publishing is still an evolving technology, there is much technical diversity within the industry. A multitude of systems and applications are in use, each with their own quirks and complications. The perception that it is easy to create documents by computer has been deceiving; what looks good on the screen frequently does not translate into ink on paper.
A good understanding of electronic file preparation goes a long way towards easing the pains of production. Incorrectly constructed electronic pages create delays and generate surcharges. The less complex a file, the faster, cleaner, and less expensive the processing.
