Preflight Errors:


PDF Producer is Quartz PDFContext:

If the Mac OS is used to make PDFs, the Producer will be shown as Quartz PDF Context. PDFs made using this method can have serious problems. Some problems may only show at plate output.

What you should do:

Check the process that you are using to make your PDFs. Contact your TSA for assistance.

Font is Not Embedded:

All fonts must be embedded.

What you should do:

A new PDF is required. Make sure that all fonts are active before making the new PDF.

Image Resolution:

The Preflight Manager will show what the resolution of the image is and what the threshold for error is.

What you should do:

Check the image to see if it is acceptable to use as is. If it is acceptable, you can approve the page. If it is not acceptable to run as is, reject the page, replace the image in your original document, make a revised PDF, and upload it to the job.

Preflight Warnings:


A Nonpress Color Space is Used:

At least one element in the PDF uses RGB, Calibrated RGB or LAB color space.

What you should do:

Decide if you want to accept the conversion to CMYK that has been applied to the PDF. If it is acceptable, approve the page. If it is not acceptable, reject the page and replace it with a PDF that does not contain RGB, Cal RGB or LAB colored elements. Remember that InSite is not accurate for color without the Kodak Matchprint Virtual package.

A Spot Color is Used:

At least one element in the PDF uses a Spot color.

What you should do:

If the page is not intended to print with Spot inks, decide if you want to accept the conversion to CMYK that has been applied to the PDF. If it is acceptable, approve the page. If it is not acceptable, reject the page and replace it with a PDF that does not contain Spot colored elements. Remember that InSite is not accurate for color without the Kodak Matchprint Virtual package.

Document Contains Layers:

The PDF contains layers. All layers in a PDF are applied during automatic processing.

What you should do:

Examine the PDF for extra elements. If elements that are from a layer that is not intended to print are present, reject the page, go back to your original PDF and flatten the layers. Make sure the new PDF only contains the elements that are intended to print. Upload the new PDF.

PDF Contains Multiple Pages:

All pages need to be in their own PDFs. Multipage PDFs should never be submitted.

What you should do:

Reject all pages from the multipage PDF. Make new PDFs that contain one page only. Make sure that each PDF is named to clearly identify the page that it contains (see File Naming Best Practices). Upload new PDFs.

White Text or Object Does Not Knock Out:

Preflight will set the overprint setting to Knockout for any white objects that are found to not knock out.

What you should do:

Preflight Information:


Carefully examine the page to make sure that the appearance matches expectations for print.

Ink Coverage Exceeding Threshold 300:

Total ink density (the sum of the percent values of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black) exceeds 300%. Excessive ink density can cause problems on press with the page that contains the high ink density and with other pages in the same press signature.

What you should do:

If the Preflight manager indicates that text or other objects have a total ink density of 400%, it is advisable that a revised file be created and uploaded. Any other areas with ink coverage over 300% should be evaluated for risk to quality. If the risk is acceptable, approve the page. Consult with your TSA and CSR if there are any questions.

Compression:

The PDF uses compression method other than JPEG / Maximum Quality or CCITT Group 4.

What you should do:

No action is required. JPEG / Maximum Quality is applied to color or grayscale images and CCITT Group 4 is applied to bit map images automatically.
